An American Werewolf in London follows David Kessler, a young American tourist hiking the Yorkshire Moors with his friend Jack Goodman. After they ignore local warnings and leave a remote pub, a savage animal attack kills Jack and leaves David critically injured. David wakes in a London hospital under the care of nurse Alex Price, who grows close to him during his recovery. He is plagued by vivid nightmares and visits from Jack’s increasingly decayed corpse, who explains that David has been bitten by a werewolf and will transform unless he ends his own life. David dismisses the warnings as trauma even as his body begins to change and the full moon draws nearer.

David moves in with Alex and tries to resume ordinary life, yet the curse asserts itself with a painful, fully realized transformation that sends him hunting through London. He wakes with no clear memory of the night’s violence and learns of fresh killings that match his path. Jack continues to appear, urging David to suicide before more innocents die, while Alex struggles to believe the supernatural explanation. David’s attempts to warn others and contain the beast fail as another moon cycle approaches, forcing a final confrontation in the city that ends the curse at terrible personal cost.
