Against the Storm
A queen’s viceroy must raise short-lived settlements in a forest drowned by endless rain, balancing the hungers and tempers of several peoples before the wilds or the crown close in. Each failed or sealed camp feeds the next push deeper into a blighted world that never truly dries.
Against the Storm follows the Viceroy, servant of the Scorched Queen, into a continent where the rain never ends and the old kingdoms have already fallen. From the relative safety of the Smoldering City the Queen dispatches the Viceroy to plant new outposts, strip the land of what it still yields, and prove that order can be forced back onto the mud. The first arrivals are a mixed band of humans, beaverfolk, lizardfolk, harpies, and foxes, each bringing distinct appetites, crafts, and limits that must be met or the camp frays. Timber, food, and shelter go up under constant downpour while the surrounding forest grows hostile the longer anyone stays. Reputation with the crown rises only if the settlement produces, survives, and eventually seals its work before blight or famine ends the attempt.
When a site is sealed or lost, the Viceroy returns to the City with whatever knowledge and goods were won, then takes a fresh charter into another stretch of wilderness. Ancient ruins, strange groves, and the forest’s own anger complicate every layout; satisfying one people can leave another cold or hungry. Cycles of storm and resettlement wipe the board on a larger scale, so no single town is meant to stand forever. The pressure is always the same: build fast enough to please the Queen, care for the settlers well enough that they do not break, and leave before the land itself decides the experiment is over. Survival is measured in how many times the Viceroy can repeat the gamble without being recalled in disgrace.
